Job Description

Seasonal Community Health Worker/Canvasser (Stamford, CT)

Family Centers Inc. is immediately hiring people passionate about empowering everyone in our diverse local neighborhoods to get the COVID-19 vaccine as an integral part of the Stamford Vaccine Equity Partnership. The Community Health Worker/Canvasser will connect with individuals by going door-to-door to educate about COVID-19, answer questions about the vaccine, and assist individuals in getting their shot.

Latinx/Hispanic, Black and other communities of color and lower-income neighborhoods have been hardest-hit by COVID-19, but vaccination rates are currently half that of whites in more affluent areas. The Stamford Vaccine Equity Partnership is working to eliminate this health inequity and ensure everyone — Black, white, or brown, regardless of language, immigration status, or other barriers — has access and information on COVID-19 and COVID vaccines so they can choose to be vaccinated quickly and easily.

  • Energetically door knock in designated neighborhoods and have conversations with people about the COVID-19 vaccine with the goal of scheduling vaccination commitments
  • Learn and provide accurate education and information, answer questions, and motivate people to schedule their vaccine — all in a respectful and positive manner
  • Make follow-up reminder phone calls and texts to ensure scheduled participants are able to arrive for their vaccination and problem-solve any barriers, such as transportation
  • Accurately track work and data throughout the workday
  • Distribution of COVID-19 collateral as necessary (masks, flyers, door hangers, lawn signs, etc.)
  • Assist at mobile vaccination clinics, Vaccine Equity Partnership member events, and other community COVID-19-related activities as needed

  • Strong support for COVID-19 vaccination and enthusiasm for helping people learn about and then access COVID vaccine. Any healthcare background is a plus, but not required (educational training provided)
  • Proven experience serving or mobilizing people in work, non-profit, political, or volunteer settings. Door knocking/Canvassing experience a plus (training provided)
  • Outgoing personality, strong speaking skills, and comfortable interacting with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole or Polish a strong plus
  • People of color, especially Stamford residents or those with ties to the local community, strongly encouraged to apply
  • Skilled in using computers (Windows, Google) and cell phone apps
  • Ability to work independently and be a proactive problem-solver, while also being accountable to teammates and the Vaccine Equity Partnership
  • Reliable transportation and smartphone with cell service
  • Consistent availability to work scheduled afternoon/evenings and weekends

  • Up to $30/hour, depending on experience and assigned responsibilities (work-related expenses are also reimbursed)
  • 30-40 hours/week. Hours are typically weekdays 1 PM – 8 PM, and Saturdays and Sunday afternoons. Flexibility and daytime hours will be needed to accommodate special events and community needs
  • Campaign is hiring immediately and expected to run through the end of summer (this is a temporary/seasonal position)
