Dental Patients & Opioids – Managing Risk Part II
June 21, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Dental pain, both acute and chronic, is a serious problem for many patients. Dentists are challenged with adequately managing dental pain while balancing the risk of controlled substance abuse and diversion. Safe prescribing skills are a critical aspect of patient care amid today’s opioid abuse crisis. Part Two of this program will review the basics of dental pain management and prescribing, including patient counseling and the selection of effective analgesic medications. This course will also propose risk management recommendations to help dentists navigate ethical concerns and regulatory requirements associated with pain management and prescribing.
- • Recognize the impact of opioid use/abuse in acute and chronic pain management.
- • Compare the risks and benefits of various analgesic medication alternatives.
- • Review analgesic prescribing principles in the management of dental pain, including for vulnerable populations such as adolescents, geriatrics, and patients with a history of substance use disorder(s).
- • Identify strategies to help minimize the risks associated with prescribing opioids and other controlled substances.
