AmeriCorps Week 2018: Healthy Futures in Connecticut
March 16, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
AmeriCorps Week is a celebration of all things AmeriCorps – from the programs and organizations that make this national service initiative possible in thousands of locations across the country, to the members who have committed to “Get Things Done” since the program’s inception in 1994.
As part of the 2018 festivities, CHCACT STICH and RYASAP Prevention Corps have come together to host a celebration of AmeriCorps programs for healthy futures in Connecticut. Join us on Friday March 16th, 2018 at the University of Bridgeport in the Grand Room to learn about the impact our programs have, meet AmeriCorps members who are currently serving, and join in a nationwide “Thank You” to currently serving members, alumni, and programs.
Prevention Corps is a new AmeriCorps initiative that is changing the way communities respond to the opioid epidemic. Our diverse cohort serves with local prevention councils, health departments, schools, and other community organizations in 19 communities. Prevention Corps members are addressing CT’s opioid crisis through community education (including Narcan and SBIRT training), stigma reduction efforts, and resource creation that will drastically change the course of this public health issue.
The Community Health Center Association of Connecticut, Inc. (CHCACT) Service to Improve Community Health (STICH) AmeriCorps program aims to expand access to primary care and preventative health care for communities in Bridgeport, Cheshire, Danbury, East Hartford, Hartford, New Haven, Norwalk, Norwich, Torrington, and Waterbury. STICH members are responsible for increasing the understanding of health insurance literacy of 2,535 unduplicated individuals and changing the attitude of 10,357 unduplicated individuals to feel better equipped to navigate the health care system through health education.
