Overview:

CommunityHealthCorps-LogoThe Community HealthCorps program is the largest health-focused, national AmeriCorps program that promotes health care for America’s underserved while developing tomorrow’s healthcare workforce. The mission is to improve healthcare access and enhance workforce development through community health center sponsored Community HealthCorps Members. Community HealthCorps Members serve for a minimum of 1,700 hours over the course of 10 months. The 2014–2015 program year began at the end of September 2014.

Member Activities:

Through the Community Health Center Association of Connecticut, Community HealthCorps Members are placed throughout Connecticut at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs). Members participate in different activities at different placement sites, ranging from outreach to patient education to case management. Some examples of these activities include:

  • Bridgeport – outreach, case management-facilitation, distribution of educational materials, collaboration development, health information technology, program development, health education on lead safety
  • Danbury – resource mobilization, outreach
  • New Haven – outreach, health education/supportive counseling, program development
  • Norwich – case management-referral and facilitation, collaboration development, outreach, program development
  • Waterbury – program development, health information technology, outreach, case management-referral and facilitation

*Note: Members cannot choose their placement sites but geographical preference will be taken into consideration during the selection process.

Members also participate in required trainings, conference calls, monthly meetings and service projects. Some examples of events and service projects the Members have participated in the past include:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • AmeriCorps Week
  • National Community Health Center Week
  • CT Mission of Mercy, Inner-City Dental Mission and Give Kids a Smile Day events
  • National Community Health Center Week
  • Habitat for Humanity projects
  • Community clean-ups, outdoor clean-ups, community health fairs, painting projects, and more.

Compensation:

Community HealthCorps Members enjoy a number of benefits including:

  • Bi-weekly living allowance stipend (gross $12,530)
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Child care (if eligible)
  • Student loan forbearance
  • Educational award of $5,730 at the conclusion of service.

Requirements:

An applicant to the Community HealthCorps program must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National or a lawful permanent resident
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Have a high school diploma or a GED, or agree to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent before graduating from this program
  • Be able to commit to a minimum of 40 hours of service per week for 10 months.

Consistent with applicable law, a pre-employment drug test will be required if a conditional offer of employment is made to you. A positive test result will result in the offer being withdrawn and a denial of employment with CHCACT. Similarly, if you refuse to take the drug test, the offer will be withdrawn and you will be denied employment by CHCACT. A copy of a positive urinalysis drug test result will be provided to you.
