STICH AmeriCorps program is Fundraising and Collecting Donations to Benefit Families Migrating from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria
Cheshire, CT- Service to Improve Community Health (STICH) AmeriCorps announced today that it will be conducting donation drives for families migrating from Puerto Rico in the months since Hurricane Maria and other storms devastated the island. Proceeds from donation drives will be used to create care packages that will include resources such as school supplies, winter clothing, snacks, and other items for effected family members. These items will then be distributed to Puerto Rican families through the Puerto Rico Relief Center, a charity group based in Bridgeport, CT. STICH AmeriCorps will also be hosting an event on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 15, 2018 at 975 East Main Street, Bridgeport, CT where the care packages will be assembled, and entertainment activities will also be provided for community members.
According to the AmeriCorps official website, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." It calls for all Americans to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."
STICH AmeriCorps involves 20 AmeriCorps members who serve to expand access to primary care and preventative health care for communities in Bridgeport, Cheshire, Danbury, East Hartford, Hartford, New Haven, Norwalk, Norwich, Torrington, and Waterbury.
