Dental Patients & Opioids – Managing Risk, Part I
June 14 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Opioid drug overdoses and deaths in the United States have been at epidemic proportions for years, with no signs of abating. As healthcare leaders, dental practitioners can help reduce drug abuse rates by responding compassionately to patient needs and learning to recognize signs of substance use disorders. Furthermore, as prescribers, dentists must also be aware of potential prescription drug diversion scams and schemes. Part One of this program will review best practices and propose general risk management recommendations to help dental practitioners screen for substance use disorders and deter drug diversion.
- Explain the factors that have contributed to the epidemic of opioid addiction and overdoses.
- Understand the dentist’s responsibility and role in identification, referral and treatment of substance use disorders.
- Recognize common drug diversion signs, scams and schemes in the dental office.
- Identify strategies to help minimize the possibility of drug diversion and manage patients that present with possible substance use disorders.
