SEARCH

SEARCH is a unique program that enables National Health Service Corp (NHSC) Scholars and other health professions students and residents to work on interdisciplinary teams to care for the underserved in rural and urban settings. The potential impact of the CT SEARCH (Student/Resident Experiences And Rotations in Community Health) Program is to increase training opportunities; the result would be to retain Connecticut-trained health professionals into careers within the system of 14 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC). This in turn would reduce the keen workforce needs currently experienced at CT FQHCs where recruitment of a primary care physician typically takes one year. Once in place at an FQHC, clinicians who have been trained through SEARCH program rotational opportunities will have a clear sense of the mission, the population needs and a providing culturally competent care as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

SEARCH is a collaboration consisting of the NHSC, primary care organizations, and health professional schools in 28 States and U.S. Territories. To read more about SEARCH and the NHSC click here

Students

  • SEARCH students (medical, dental, advance practice nursing and physician assistant) will be selected for 6 week (30-day) summer internships. Each student will be matched with an FQHC preceptor and a mentor.
  • Students will choose from three possible project areas to focus their internship. Topic areas will be selected by the SEARCH Partner Network each year. The internship will consist of 2 days per week of clinical rotation at an FQHC, 2 days per week of project work conducted as appropriate at the FQHC or CHCACT, and 1 day of professional development with expert faculty presentation.

Residents

The clinical rotations for residents will be developed in concert with each FQHC medical residency sites and the residents academic institution and advisors. Each resident will be matched with three FQHC preceptors, one from internal medicine, one from family medicine and one from pediatrics, to provide a multidisciplinary experience.
