Emergency Preparedness
The Community Health Center Association of Connecticut (CHCACT) collaborates with the Connecticut Department of Public Health to implement a comprehensive Emergency Management Planning Program through the community health centers across the state. The goal of the program is to increase the level of preparedness at every health center through training, infrastructure enhancement and drills. CHCACT convenes community health centers and other state and community partners to provide a forum for education, communication and sharing. The group, called the Community Health Emergency Response Network (CHERN), meets quarterly. CHERN members take their knowledge back to their centers and integrate it into the ongoing emergency preparedness activities at their centers. In addition, they serve as the “resident expert” and point person for the identification of training and technical assistance needs of their center.
CHCACT and its members have been actively involved in Connecticut's emergency preparedness efforts, including working with government agencies, such as the Connecticut Department of Public Health and The Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS), and other public health providers, including Connecticut's hospitals. CHCACT and its members play an important role in the ongoing evolution of the nation's emergency preparedness infrastructure as the nation continues to mobilize against threats of terrorism, while still maintaining readiness for more traditional emergencies, such as power outages, floods and hurricanes.
The 2009-10 DPH Emergency Prepardness deliverables will involve implementing an Evacuation/shelter in place drill at 12 CT health center. The health center will be required to take the Yale New Haven Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response EM 150 course, partner with community partners, and attend statewide meetings. For more information contact Scott Selig, SSelig@chcact.org. Connecticut CHCs will be encouraged to run their own drills and exercises with assistance from CHCACT in the 2009-10 grant year. Also, Centers will be provided TA to make sure their EM plans are ready for a pandemic flu. CHCACT will facilitate all H1N1 activites as they pertain the Community Health Centers. We will concetrate on PPE(personal protection equipment) re-supply, N95 fit-testing and communication procedures.
